Kenya Targets 50 Percent Local Production of Essential Health Products by 2030
Kenya aims to produce at least half of its essential medicines and other health products domestically by 2030 as part of efforts to reduce dependence on imports.
Kenya’s Ministry of Health is implementing a 2026-2030 strategy aimed at expanding domestic manufacturing of health products and technologies.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said at the PharmaReg AfriSummit 2026 in Nairobi that the country aims to meet at least 50 percent of its essential health-product requirements through domestic manufacturing by 2030.
According to government figures, 13 new pharmaceutical companies have established operations in Kenya, with some already producing goods for export.
Authorities have also intensified market surveillance, removing more than 2,200 substandard, falsified or non-compliant products from circulation.
The strategy covers pharmaceuticals as well as vaccines, diagnostic products and medical devices.
Kenya hopes the programme will reduce vulnerability to external supply-chain disruptions and strengthen the country’s pharmaceutical manufacturing base.
