Libya’s Menfi, Al-Lafi and Takala Call for Progress Toward Elections
Libyan Presidential Council President Mohammed Menfi, his deputy Abdullah Al-Lafi and High Council of State President Mohammed Takala called for an inclusive political process and agreed electoral laws to pave the way for national elections.
Senior representatives of Libya’s political institutions met in Tripoli to discuss the country’s prolonged political stalemate and the path toward elections.
Presidential Council President Mohammed Menfi, Deputy President Abdullah Al-Lafi and High Council of State President Mohammed Takala said political agreements should remain consistent with Libya’s constitutional and legal frameworks.
The three officials also stressed that the process leading toward elections should be Libyan-led and should not exclude relevant institutions or political actors.
Discussions also covered the unification of state institutions, ending the transitional political phase and establishing a legal framework capable of supporting free and credible elections.
The meeting came after the House of Representatives leadership announced amendments to certain laws governing presidential and parliamentary elections.
