Nigeria Revives Plan for Natural Gas Pipeline to Europe Through Libya
Nigeria and Libya are considering further technical and economic studies for a proposed pipeline that would transport Nigerian natural gas through Libya toward European markets.
Nigeria has revived plans for a natural gas pipeline through Libya as part of efforts to diversify export routes and expand access to European markets.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo, discussed the project with Libya’s Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdulsadek, on the sidelines of Gastech 2026 in Bangkok.
The proposal would require detailed assessment of the project’s commercial viability, financing, infrastructure requirements and security conditions.
The two sides are also considering the preparation of a memorandum of understanding and the creation of a joint working group to oversee technical and economic studies.
If implemented, the project could allow Nigerian gas to reach the Mediterranean through Libya before being transported onward to European consumers.
However, the final route, project cost, financing structure and construction timetable have not yet been determined.
