Pro-Government Forces Take Control of Strategic Alamata Town in Ethiopia
Ethiopian government forces and allied units said they had taken control of the strategic town of Alamata in southern Tigray. The town is considered militarily and logistically important due to its location on the main route toward Mekelle.
Government forces have made gains in northern Ethiopia as fighting intensifies around southern Tigray.
Footage released by the pro-government Tigrai Peace Force showed troops carrying Ethiopian flags and moving through the streets of Alamata. Reuters verified that the footage was recorded in the town.
Alamata is located around 120 kilometres south of Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region. Its proximity to the Amhara border and position along major north-south transport routes make it an important logistical hub.
The latest development follows renewed military operations by Tigrayan forces and their allies, prompting increased counter-operations by federal government forces.
The renewed fighting has also raised fresh concerns over the future of the Pretoria Peace Agreement signed in 2022, which ended the previous large-scale war in northern Ethiopia.
