Tanzania Explores Greater Use of Natural Gas for Domestic Fertiliser Production
Tanzania is considering expanding domestic fertiliser production using its natural gas resources as part of efforts to reduce import dependence and strengthen food security.
The Tanzanian government is exploring ways to use a larger share of the country’s natural gas resources to support the agricultural sector.
Finance Minister Khamis Mussa Omar said ahead of meetings linked to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank in Doha that Tanzania and other gas-producing African countries should place greater emphasis on domestic fertiliser manufacturing.
Omar argued that disruptions in global shipping have exposed the risks faced by economies that remain heavily dependent on imported strategic goods.
He said countries should increase their capacity to produce essential commodities using domestic resources.
Tanzania is seeking to use its natural gas reserves more extensively in power generation, petrochemicals and industrial development.
Fertiliser production is seen as one sector capable of linking the country’s energy resources directly to agricultural development.
