Uganda’s Public Debt Rises to 143.9 Trillion Shillings
Uganda’s public debt reached 143.92 trillion Ugandan shillings by the end of June 2026, according to Finance Ministry figures, with the debt-to-GDP ratio rising to 54.3 percent.

Uganda’s public debt increased by approximately 18.7 trillion shillings during the 2025/2026 financial year, reaching 143.92 trillion shillings, equivalent to around $37.12 billion.
Finance Ministry figures show that the debt stock had stood at 125.23 trillion shillings in June 2025.
Domestic debt increased to 80.72 trillion shillings, accounting for around 56.1 percent of total public debt.
External debt was valued at approximately 63.20 trillion shillings.
The country’s debt-to-GDP ratio also rose from 51.3 percent to 54.3 percent over the same period.
The government has said it plans to reduce borrowing pressure in future budget cycles and improve the efficiency of public spending.
