Abiy Ahmed Issues Stern Warning to Eritrea, Levels Serious Accusations Against TPLF

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has warned Eritrea's leadership that rejecting calls for peace and shared economic development could lead to serious consequences. He also accused the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) of violating the Pretoria Peace Agreement, failing to fulfil its disarmament obligations and obstructing reconstruction efforts in the Tigray region.

Abiy Ahmed Issues Stern Warning to Eritrea, Levels Serious Accusations Against TPLF

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made strong statements targeting the Eritrean government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in a Tigrinya-language interview released on October 19, 2026.

Reiterating his calls for peace, economic cooperation and shared development with Eritrea, Abiy criticised the policies pursued by the authorities in Asmara.

Turning to developments in Tigray, the Ethiopian leader emphasised that the future of the region's people should not be tied to the survival or political interests of any particular organisation.

Abiy maintained that the federal government had been working to restore peace and essential public services in Tigray, while accusing the TPLF leadership of pursuing policies that have hindered the region's recovery.

Abiy Warns Eritrea of Serious Consequences

Abiy Ahmed accused Eritrea's leadership of cooperating with forces hostile to Ethiopia and obstructing efforts to normalise relations between the two countries.

He said Ethiopia remained committed to peace, cooperation and shared economic development, warning that Eritrea's failure to respond positively to these initiatives could have serious consequences.

The Prime Minister argued that regional stability could be achieved through mutual understanding and economic cooperation.

He also criticised Eritrea's current political approach, suggesting that it was contributing to rising tensions between Addis Ababa and Asmara.

Eritrea's Industrial Decline and Foreign Support Under Criticism

The Ethiopian Prime Minister also addressed Eritrea's economic history, claiming that the country once possessed more than 300 factories.

Abiy attributed the decline in industrial production and commercial activity to the policies of Eritrea's leadership.

He further criticised Eritrea's foreign supporters, arguing that some of these actors were capable of supplying ammunition and military assistance but struggled to resolve their own domestic challenges.

His comments came amid continuing political and military tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

TPLF Accused of Violating the Pretoria Peace Agreement

Abiy Ahmed addressed the implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, signed in November 2022 between the Ethiopian federal government and the TPLF.

He maintained that the federal government had fulfilled its commitments regarding the cessation of hostilities and the restoration of essential services.

However, he accused the TPLF of failing to meet its obligations under the agreement.

According to Abiy, the TPLF continued purchasing weapons instead of completing the disarmament process and was forcibly recruiting young people into its armed formations.

The Prime Minister also accused the organisation of obstructing the return of internally displaced people to their homes.

He argued that renewed fighting in Tigray had further worsened the economic and humanitarian difficulties facing the region's population.

Abiy Draws a Distinction Between the Tigray People and the TPLF

One of the central themes of the interview was Abiy Ahmed's distinction between the Tigray people and the political organisation claiming to represent them.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister warned against equating the security or survival of a political party with the security and future of an entire population.

He noted that the TPLF, with a history spanning approximately five decades, should not be treated as synonymous with the Tigray people, whose historical and cultural heritage extends back thousands of years.

Abiy argued that political organisations and governments could change or disappear over time, while the people themselves would continue to exist.

He emphasised that the political interests of individual groups should not determine the future of the Tigray population.

Ethiopian Government Pledges Peace and Reconstruction in Tigray

Abiy Ahmed said the Ethiopian federal government would continue working with the people of Tigray to restore peace and rebuild the region.

He stressed that Tigray's future should be based on economic development, stability and the strengthening of public services rather than renewed armed confrontation.

The Prime Minister warned that another cycle of war would deepen the suffering of communities already affected by years of conflict.

He maintained that the interests of political organisations must not be allowed to take precedence over the long-term well-being of the population.

Abiy's latest remarks on Eritrea and the TPLF come at a time of heightened uncertainty across the Horn of Africa, where regional security concerns, disagreements over the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and the political future of Tigray remain unresolved.
