Uganda's military leadership hosted a Somali defence delegation at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe for discussions on the future of bilateral security cooperation.

During the meeting, Somalia's military chief expressed appreciation for Uganda's longstanding role in preparing and mentoring Somali soldiers.

Brigadier General Mohamud requested additional training opportunities to improve the Somali National Army's operational readiness and professional capabilities.

General Kainerugaba welcomed the request for closer cooperation and reiterated Uganda's determination to maintain its partnership with Somalia.

The Ugandan military chief also highlighted the historical relationship between the two countries and their shared commitment to regional stability.

Security challenges and political developments discussed

The commanders exchanged views on Somalia's security environment, including challenges associated with the country's ongoing electoral process.

Brigadier General Mohamud briefed the Ugandan leadership on developments affecting Somali security institutions and the importance of sustained military cooperation.

Uganda has been involved in African Union security missions in Somalia since 2007, contributing troops and supporting efforts to strengthen the country's security institutions.

Ugandan forces currently serve under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), alongside Somali security personnel and other regional partners.

Regional defence conference strengthens engagement

The talks followed the African Chiefs of Defence Forces Conference on Military Operations Other Than War, hosted by Uganda from October 5 to 8.

The gathering brought together African military leaders to discuss cooperation, security challenges and the role of armed forces in responding to crises beyond conventional combat operations.

The Somali military chief thanked Uganda for the invitation, describing the conference as a valuable opportunity to strengthen professional relationships and exchange military expertise.

Military partnership opens discussion on investment

Economic cooperation also featured in the discussions, with both commanders expressing interest in expanding relations beyond defence and security.

The two sides highlighted the potential for Ugandan businesses to explore investment opportunities in Somalia as security conditions improve.

The meeting was attended by senior Ugandan military officials, including Lieutenant General Jack Bakasumba, Major General Wyclieff Keita and Colonel Martin Nsengiyunva.

Although both countries expressed support for stronger military cooperation, no new formal training agreement or additional deployment commitment was announced.
